The Forerunner is absolutely sleek and clasps easily onto your wrist without causing any discomfort to it. Indeed, you will never notice this extra thing on your body while you are running. This indicates that the watch is highly light weighted.

In addition to the powerful and accurate GPS, the Forerunner also features a watch and optional chest-mounted heart rate monitor. Even if you choose to forego the monitor to save money, choosing the Forerunner ensures that you can upgrade later without needing to purchase anything other than the strap.
Keep your routine fresh. Discover additional or varied routing by using garmin's thorough and complete mapping. Additionally, by planning your run and deliberately choosing the scenic route, your workout can be a pleasant interlude instead of the tedium you may experience when you take the same route each day.
Track it all together. You will want to see your stats to get a sense of how you are doing as well as to come up with some goals. The Forerunner combines two functions, route mapping through GPS satellite-based location, with the gathering of fitness statistics, in a single device. After all, running should be fun and freeing, not encumbered with bookkeeping and record filing.
* Train out of the box. Although training is one the most important ingredients in any exercise regimen, it is often overlooked entirely or intermittent at best. Garmin Training Center software, included with the Forerunner, makes a personalizable training experience available to every Forerunner owner. For professional runners, or those needing more features than the Garmin Training Center provides, the TrainingPeaks.Their web site will provide guidance on creating running strategies as well as useful advice for one and all.
* Forget those wires. Many devices we use as our society becomes more tecnnological to try to help us do things more efficiently and faster come with many different cables which can become a tangled mess or lost and this becomes very frustrating. The Forerunner 405 operates without wires and is convenient to use and carry.
* Make running less solitary. If you enjoy running but prefer not to feel alone, the Forerunner can help. You will almost have the illusion of a running buddy to compete against! Garmin Connect a social network allows users to share experiences of runners around the world.
You might want to opt to purchase a heart monitor one day. If you aren't exercising with a heart rate monitor, then you should start soon if your fitness regimen is something you take seriously. The monitors don't stop with study of heart beat rate but closely watch consumption of calories and such essential parameters. The Forerunner GPS is an upgradable and good quality heart monitor.

The primary item that you will observe about the Garmin 405cx GPS watch is its compact size. It is really diminutive, in view of all that it can do. While the heart rate monitor watch is just a slight bit bigger than your average heart rate monitor watch, it is by no means over bearing. Present are only two buttons on the heart rate monitor watch itself, Start/Stop and Lap/Reset.
A bezel around the heart rate monitor that is sensitive to touch controls many other functions. The control function does take a minor bit of getting used to but Garmin provides you with impressive online user manuals to give you a jump on getting on track.
A child could get this heart rate monitor set up. The quick start guidebook that comes with the GPS watch was clear-cut and straightforward to pick up on. Prior to making use of the pulse function it is compulsory to synchronize the chest strap with the supplied heart rate watch. As soon as that is matched you will then need to synchronize it with the wireless receiver. The wireless receiver really allows the user to transmit all of their exercise measurements wirelessly to the PC by simply bringing the heart rate watch to within 3 meters of the USB receiver.
Charging the GPS watch is done by utilizing the supplied USB connector cable. The cable easily attaches on the side of the heart rate watch to charge. The watch screen will exhibit how much battery time is left making use of a percentage. The battery in reality charges rather fast. Our test GPS watch charged in just about an hour to complete capability.
Making use of the GPS watch was straightforward enough, although it did take some time to understand the menu and control function using the finger sensitive bezel. As soon as you get the GPS watch set up the operation is pretty uncomplicated, a lot like a lot of of Garmin’s other watches. The smaller supplementary wrist strap makes this heart rate watch optimal for little wrists. Optional speed and cadence sensors record your velocity and cadence for bicyclists.
The watch screen can be organized to put on view as much, or as little, information as you might like. Showing your most important measurements on the watch screen is the best practice. Each person can adapt the fields to display, say, pulse rate at all times visible. Or else adjust it to state distance and pulse rate displayed at the same time.
Present are in reality a lot of fields that you can pick for allowing the athlete to actually modify their GPS watch.
Perhaps the individual problem we have with this GPS watch is the touch bezel as touch can change the screen. Taking into account becoming used to the GPS watch we uncovered that you can lock the bezel, ridding yourself of this trouble. We feel it might have been convenient to allow the bezel lock itself after a small interval. This is only a minor problem and wouldn't stop us from acquiring the GPS watch.

Is the Garmin car GPS the best model to buy? Or should you go with Tom Tom? Opinion seems divided between the two makers, even though Garmin out sells Tom Tom over 2 to 1.
To help you decide between the two, I'm going to compare the Garmin car GPS with Tom Tom. Hopefully, this will give you a little help on deciding which company and which of their models is right for you.
Garmin Car GPS
Garmin sells 50% of the GPS devices sold in the United States. (To be fair, in Europe Tom Tom is the industry leader.)
There's a reason for Garmin's dominance of the U. S. market. They simply have more models to choose from at more price points.
I'm not going to discuss every single Garmin model in this article. But I will mention a few that I like at various prices.
In the entry-level market, you have the Garmin nuvi 200 and the nuvi 350. The nuvi 200 is a true entry-level device. It can do everything a GPS is supposed to (tell you where you are and show you how to get to where you're going), but it doesn't have many features beyond that.
The nuvi 200 currently runs about $150.
The nuvi 350, on the other hand, has a few great features like maps of the whole United States and Canada. It also can receive traffic and weather alerts (with subscription). At only $200, that's a lot of GPS for the money!
In the middle of the market, Garmin has the incredible nuvi 760, which sells for just under $350. The 760 has a wider screen than either the nuvi 200 or the nuvi 350. It also has Bluetooth capability, traffic and weather alerts, and it can route it's sound through your car's stereo system. It also does multiple point routing, which means you can enter more than one destination in at a time.
Consumer Reports called the nuvi 760 the best overall GPS on the market, recently. I happen to agree.
At the high end of the market, there's the nuvi 880. It can do everything the nuvi 760 can and also has several impressive cutting-edge features that no one else has. The nuvi 880 will set you back a cool $900, but if you're looking for state-of-the-art, look no further!
Tom Tom
Tom Tom doesn't really compete with Garmin at the high end of the market. Actually, no one does.
Where Tom Tom is most competitive is the low end.
Their Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition can do much more than the nuvi 200, but sells for essentially the same! If I were going to buy and entry-level unit, I would probably spring for the One, 3rd Edition.
In the middle of the market there's the Tom Tom GO 920T, which sells for about the same as the nuvi 760 ($350). The GO 920T has Bluetooth and the wider screen. It also has Tom Tom's own Map Share technology, which let's users actually correct Tom Tom's map database.
Personally, I would go with the Garmin nuvi 760, if I wanted a middle range product.
So, my comparison ends up like this: Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition for $150, the Garmin nuvi 760 for around $350, and the Garmin nuvi 880 for $900.
There's certainly more to know about GPS devices than just this. For one, there's the company Magellan and their fine products.
But this at least will give you a start.
What you need to do now is get on an informative website where you can browse individual models and check out current prices.

Customer Reviews Gilsson GHS-12V Cigarette Lighter Adapter for Garmin nüvi 600 to 5000, StreetPilot C510 to C580 and Zumo 400 to 550 (Black)

A Great Replacement I purchased a Garmin Nuvi and have been using it for several months. One problem I encountered is that the end of the 12V (cigarette lighter) adapter came unscrewed and the parts inside fell out--a spring, fuse, etc. The second time this happened I couldn't find all of the parts so the cable was useless! I purchased this cable as a replacement and it seems to fit and work perfectly with the Garmin.
Garmin 760 power cord My dog chewed up my Garmin power cord for my Nuvi 760 while I was at school, so I bought this one. It arrived in a couple of days and works perfectly.
Quality Power Cable I bought it from Amazon that was selling it cheaper than other internet sellers. I got it fast and have been using it everyday since then. It is a quality cable that powers my Garmin Street Pilot as it suppose to.

Customer Reviews Garmin nüvi 465T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Truck GPS NavigatorFrom Garmin

Looks great, but not well thought out Picked this up at J&R for my uncle, who's a truck driver. He gave me his feedback and I returned in a few days. Here's why: Pros - - Functions just like a Garmin - easy to use - NAVTEQ maps are the best - he said it had roads that PC Miler never heard of - multiple vehicle profiles Cons - - The speaker was awful - he said even with the window closed, you couldn't hear the thing at ALL. So you had to watch the screen for every turn. This also rendered the Bluetooth connection useless as you can't hear the caller. - Can't avoid a specific road (!) The GPS sometimes put him on highways that were not ideal, and there's no way to tell it NOT to use that road. - When using the dash mount, the GPS signal was not great. It worked fine in my car, but in my uncle's truck the dash was apparently too far from the window to see the satellites. It would need an external antenna. Some of these things we could live with, but the speaker and road avoidance were deal breakers. I'm looking at other options, so should you.

New -- Voice Recognition
Usable voice recognition is something we've been waiting to see for a long time. Reaching over to type out directions on your GPS isn't just difficult, it can feel downright dangerous. There's even a warning on every GPS not to do it. But who has the time to sit still and punch in a destination? Well, now you can have your hurry and your directions too.
The nüvi 800s aren't the first GPS navigators to offer voice recognition, but the level of flexibility they offer sets a new standard for simple and intuitive use.
The device comes with a little remote control that mounts on your steering wheel. It has two buttons. One is, "listen." The other is, "stop listening". Hit the "listen" button to start voice recognition. Then you can speak any of the words that appear on the display, and the device will understand, or you can ask questions based on most points of interest. Say, "find nearest Italian restaurant," for example, and you’ll get a list of nearby spots. Say "go to" and name of the one you want, and you get turn-by-turn directions to dinner. The nüvi also knows the names of many large business brands, so you can just say, "find place, Starbucks," if that's your coffee mojo.
Of course, if you know the address you want to go to, you can say that too, and the nüvi will give you directions, all without having to reach over to the dashboard and touch it.Speech recognition is available for American English, British English, European French, European Spanish, German, Italian, and Netherlands Dutch languages.

Multi-Destination Routing
This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you've found the best router, the "Route Planning" feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, "the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls." The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we're talking about).A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.

Customer Reviews Garmin nüvi 850 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS

Navigator with Voice Command and FM Transmitter (Soft Black)From Garmin
Over-priced and all features not so good We, as consumers, seem to easily reward mediocrity. That is why I see some folks have given this model a good rating. I think this model, at best, should get a 3 out of 5. While this GPS is good, I think it is over-priced at $244 that I paid for it. I wanted to try out the voice recognition and it is not very good. Garmin provides a separate wrist-watch type of remote which has a strap that installs on your steering wheel. This remote keeps getting in the way as you turn the steering wheel. They could have just provided a touch screen button (yes, yes, I know, they don't want you to look at the screen when driving and get distracted but even their voice recognition system in this 850 requires you to look at the screen from time-to-time. For example, when using Points of Interest feature, you will have to look at the screen menu to select as it lists choices on the screen and prompts you to look at it and call out the corresponding number. The voice recognition system is still developing and is hampered by noises, accents and is slow. But you may find it fun to have and certainly may be useful on certain occasions. I also did not like the on-off switch as it is a bit hard to use than other models of GPS that I have. They do not provide an A/C adapter / charger and you have to pay more for it. It does not have blue-tooth either (for a high priced item, you would think it should be there). If this model was $150, I would give it a higher rating.
Works great...when it is FULLY charged and out of the sun. I loved this the first week, but after 8 months of frustrations I have turned against it. I am a heavy user of this GPS for comping foreclosures before auction. I have to program my routes fast, and when it works, it works great. When it doesn't, it drives you nuts. The voice recognition won't hear. The screens display erroneous routes...sometimes temporary routes programmed months ago. My theory is the thing is underpowered. To get it to work correctly I have to keep it cool and FULLY charged. I've found if I let it get hot (even when I'm in the car with A/C on but it is in the sun on the window mount)it goes wacko. Same if you let the battery draw down to any extent. So I remove the battery, stick it and the unit in front the A/C for a minute, and I can get it to act normal again. The speech recognition DOES save a lot of time when it works, but for now its problematic. I was hoping Garmin had a high horsepower version of the 850 that works better. The 860 and 880 have the same issues. Maybe the 885 and 885T work better, but have not seen reviews that convince me yet.
Terrible technical support The product works well enough, but you will need divine assistance if you ever try to update the maps. Technical support on the telephone is both rude and completely unhelpful. The software does not function correctly and e-mail support crashed on the Garmin website (generated an unable to send error message). If you never need to update (i.e., do not plan to keep the unit long enough to need to update the maps) and are technically proficient with GPS devices and will never need technical support, then this is not a bad choice. If you are not an engineer or expect to keep your GPS unit for more than a few years, then buyer beware.

With an optional receiver, you can access enhanced dynamic content from the MSN Direct service. Even plan trips from the convenience of your computer, via Windows Live Local, and wirelessly send custom to your nüvi.Check out a full description of MSN Direct content features, or a coverage map for MSN Direct services.A 3-month subscription to MSN Direct is included with the receiver. After that, subscription fees are $49.95 per year, or $129.95 for a lifetime subscription.FM Traffic
With an optional receiver, you can get alerts from TMC Clear Channel about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.
In most areas, TMC Clear Channel traffic broadcasts are continuous — there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.
A 3-month subscription to TMC Clear Channel's Total Traffic Network is included with the receiver. For more information on subscription fees, coverage in individual cities, and traffic data networks in the United Kingdom and Europe, check the

Customer Reviews Garmin nuvi 205 3.5-Inch Portable GPS NavigatorFrom Garmin

Great entry level GPS When researching a new GPS, you have to concentrate on what features you want, and then pay attention to how the unit functions as a whole. The maps will occasionally be wrong with any unit, and locals will likely disagree with some of the routing in areas they are highly familiar with. But you aren't buying this to help you navigate your neighborhood. In my research I've found Tomtom, Magellan, and Garmin all share similarly high reviews depending on the product. That said, the Garmin Nuvi 205 is a fantastic entry level unit. It is incredibly easy to use, very quick to acquire a signal, immediate re-calculation, and accurate placement and position updates. This unit does not speak street names, but I find the verbal updates adequate enough. "In one mile, turn left" etc. gives plenty of notice on what you need to do without continually harassing you. Enterting destinations is easy. It will guess the city / street names after only a few letters, and it has a large preloaded database of locations to search. In addition to the map, during your drive it will display your current speed, the local speed limit (most of the time), distance to destination, ETA, and your next turn and which direction it will be. If there are no other turns prior to your destination, it will display which side of the road you need to be on and mark the spot with a checked flag. So far it has been 100% accurate on "side of street" placement. It has multiple settings if you need to adjust any part of the programming or features. You can have it avoid tolls, highways, u-turns, etc. You cannot edit the main interface, or what it shows you where, I would not make any changes even if I could though. This unit is compatible with the optional traffic receivers, however I have not used any of them. I love the small size as well, it fits well on the windshield with the included mount but does not get in the way, and is still very easy to read. Updating your maps online seems easy enough, I was able to connect to my computer with a standard mini-usb cable (not included) and load the website quickly. I also downloaded voices and icons directly to the device with no trouble. If you are looking for a low price GPS for casual use, and can live without bluetooth, spoken street names, and multi point routing (you can have 1 destination + 1 extra stop at once) then the nuvi 205 is perfect, and a great price. I am very satisfied with my purchase.
unit not charged This is the 2nd Garmin Nuvi 205 we've purchased. My husband likes his so much he didn't want to share so I purchased a 2nd one for myself. My only complaint is that the unit's battery was completely discharged when I received it. Since I already had the cord to hook it to the computer that's how I got it recharged. It did take a couple of hours. If I hadn't had that cord I would have had to use the car charger and drive around for awhile until it charged. The Garmin did save me about 60 miles on a recent trip. I have always traveled on the Interstates (70 to 77 to 64) on my trips from central Ohio to Virginia. The Garmin sent me to Route 33 which cuts across Ohio to WV. The state route was much shorter and only had a couple of small towns to drive thru. On one trip it told my husband to turn at an exit on the Interstate that was closed. He used the next exit and the unit recalculated the route to his destination. All in all, we are pleased with the Garmin Nuvi 205s.
First GPS This is the first GPS I have owned so don't have anything to compare it with, but it works great. The only problem I have had is in rural areas it has been off a little bit at times, but nothing major and in populated areas it works great. Liked it so much a bought a second one, exactly the same (refurbished and all -- I'm cheap!)

Customer Reviews
Fits My Nuvi 255W Perfectly Just got this installed and it does look nice. I think there is a little more glare as one reviewer has also noted. Will check it out tonight in the vehicle. I got these from SF Planet and on the envelope there was a web address given. Went to the web page and there were very detailed instructions as well as a picture on how to install. Glad I read it because I overlooked the numbers on the blue and red tags (#1 and #2). My eyesight isn't what it used to be! Peel off #1 blue tag - apply to device - smooth out with credit card - peel off #2 red tag - Done! It was real easy. Time will tell as to how long they will last, but I sure can't complain about the price. Took about 4 days from time of order to receive. No complaints with SF Planet. SF Planet instructional web page URL is below.

PERFECT PRODUCT ! Previously had tried the universal fit screen protector from another source and it was a bother to cut and fit and apply.... This was perfect and installed in 30 seconds without reading the instructions... and allows the gps touch screen to function perfectly ! A + ! (Those of you that had issues - are you sure you used the screen protector or one of the TWO protectors that protected the screen protector ???) Could see where that could happen - the real screen protector is sandwiched between two THIN tabbed films.... just an fyi..... :)
You Need This: I was at first skeptical of this item because of the reviews saying it was hard to install and that they needed all 3 before they finally got it right. What are they talking about????? 30 seconds after opening the package, my Garmin GPS was screen protected and looking like it had just come out the box. Buy this item and be at ease at how easy it is to put on your screen. NO cutting or modifying, just peel the back off, and stick on the screen.

Some GPS may contain cosmetic blemishes. What if one device could help you navigate anywhere in the U.S. andCanada, while offering travel tips, storing your favorite tunes and photos, providing translation assistance, and more? DesignWith a total weight of 5.1 ounces and slim measurements of 3.87 x 2.91 x 0.87 inches (WxHxD), the nüvi 350 is just right for the pocket or purse. A bright, 64,000-color display dominates the front of the device and a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels means that there's plenty of room for displaying map data and other elements of the device's interface. An SD memory card slot is provided for expansion software, such as a points of interest database, media files and electronic guides (see below). The flip-up antenna includes an MCX-type connector for connecting the unit to an external GPS antenna. Meanwhile, a powerful built-in speaker resides on the back of device. A built-in lithium ion battery will give you for to eight hours of battery life, depending on use. In addition to an AC charger, the unit also ships with a 12-volt power adapter for vehicle charging, as well as a windshield suction cup mount.
Fortunately, Garmin has made it easy to interface with the nüvi 350's 700 megabytes of onboard memory, thanks to "plug-and-play" USB mass storage support. Just plug the device into your computer's USB port and you've got instantaneous access to all the audio books, music, photos, supplemental maps and other data on the nüvi 350's internal and SD card memory.
NavigationThe nüvi 350 is first and foremost a personal GPS device. Wherever you go -- in your car or on foot-- the device offers extremely accurate position data, thanks to a high-sensitivity integrated GPS receiver by SiRF and WAAS-enabled, 12-satellite reception. Combined with detailed maps of the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico the nüvi 350 provides automatic routing, turn-by-turn voice directions, and touchscreen control-- making it easy to find your way anywhere. Plus, the unique "text-to-speech" feature calls out turns by street name, and you can choose from either 2D or 3D mapping perspectives when you're viewing your route on the display. Additionally, the nüvi 350 is compatible with Garmin's GTM 10 FM TMC traffic receiver*, which allows users to avoid traffic tie-ups by simply pushing a button that will calculate a new route.
As mentioned, the nüvi 350 comes packed with mapping data for North America, but you can can also load up your custom points of interest. Set up proximity alerts for school zones, safety cameras, and more using Garmin's free POI (points of interest) loader program (available from garmin.com).
Important note about map updates: Due to our high volume of sales, almost every Garmin portable GPS navigator sold by Amazon.com will come with the most recent map version. If you ever do need a map update, you can purchase one from Amazon.com at our Garmin Store.
Tools for the JourneyNavigation is just part of the journey, and the nüvi 350 is one of the first devices to recognize that. The built-in "Travel Kit" offers an MP3 player, an audio book player from Audible.com, a jpeg-format picture viewer, a world travel clock with time zones, a currency converter, a measurement converter, and a calculator.
In addition to the included travel tools, additional software add-ons are available, such as the Garmin Language Guide, with data provided by Oxford University Press. This software suite contains a multilingual word bank, phrase bank, and five bilingual dictionaries. The multilingual word bank and phrase bank supports nine languages and dialects, including American English, British English, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, European Portuguese, European Spanish, and Latin American Spanish. Now you can look up and translate more than 17,000 words or 20,000 phrases per language -- right in the palm of your hand. Through the unit's text-to-speech interface, users can get a spoken pronunciation of each entry in the word bank, along with gender and part of speech information.
Another useful add-on software package, the Garmin Travel Guide, is loaded with information provided by Marco Polo. These guides put in-depth travel information such as reviews and recommendations for restaurants, tourist attractions, and more at your fingertips. The software allows you to navigate to an address or search points of interest-- places like hotels, restaurants, shopping, and tourist attractions. The nüvi 350 automatically calculates the fastest route and provides voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions along the way. The unit also audibly announces the name of upcoming streets-- letting you keep your eyes on the road while navigating through busy traffic and tricky roadways. And if you stray off course, the nüvi 350 automatically calculates the quickest way to get back on track.
*Traffic services available only in select cities where RDS-TMC coverage exists. Requires the GTM 10 FM TMC traffic receiver and subscription fee to enable traffic capability.
What's in the Boxnüvi 350, Preloaded City Navigator NT for North America and Puerto Rico, Vehicle suction cup mount, AC charger, Vehicle power cable, Dashboard disc, USB cable, Carrying case, Quick reference guide
Which nüvi is Best for You?For a slightly higher pricepoint, Garmin's nüvi 600 and 700 series devices have richer feature sets including: MP3 players, JPEG photo viewers, the ability to receive traffic and weather information, bluetooth for hands-free calling, FM transmitters that deliver audio through your cars own stereo system, and multi-destination routing that will tell you the best way to make a trip that involves several destinations.

Customer Reviews Garmin nüvi 350 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)From Garmin

Garmin is great! Garmin is great!.. I have the 360 and have learned a great deal about using it. It helps greatly with information about gas stations, restaurants, hotels and avoiding construction. We have traveled for years and this is the best aid we've ever had.
Love it! My Magellan took forever to locate me - the best feature about the Nuvi is how quickly it finds your location when you turn on the unit. Magellan took sometimes up to 10 minutes - Nuvi takes no more than 2 minutes. Other great features are portablity and size, user friendly, very lightweight, easy to read. Cons are notfication of turns, exits, etc., which occur within .5 miles from the exit, Magellan gives a two mile and 1 mile and .5 mile notification. This gives driver ample time to maneuver especially on unfamiliar roadways and heavy traffic. Otherwise great unit for the money with many great features including hands free! I highly recommend it.
An exceptional GPS It's done all it was advertised to do!!! My only regret is my cell phone is not one that is compatible for it's blue tooth capability.

Customer Reviews Garmin nuvi 205 3.5-Inch Portable GPS NavigatorFrom Garmin
First GPS This is the first GPS I have owned so don't have anything to compare it with, but it works great. The only problem I have had is in rural areas it has been off a little bit at times, but nothing major and in populated areas it works great. Liked it so much a bought a second one, exactly the same (refurbished and all -- I'm cheap!)
Great! Since I have already owned the Nuvi 200, I will base my review off the improvments I see from the previous model. It is basically the same thing, same size but there are some new features like what the spped limit is, "where am i?" for emergencys & one noticeable ting is the screen animation when driving is more fluid/smooth and not so jerky....Highly recommend it.
My GPS got me lost! I just recently started geocaching (if you're saying "Huh?" check out geocaching.com), and when my parents came to town, I got them into it also. They already have a GPS (they use it for driving) so I decided to get one for myself. I had a different one ordered on Amazon.com but for some reason, it wasn't going to be shipped out for a few more days! So I gave up and went to Wal-Mart after work and looked at their (very small) selection. I chose the Nuvi 205 and when I got home I checked out the reviews. Mostly good reviews (sorry to lower the average!) so I was happy. My geocaching wasn't the greatest and I figured it was because I wasn't used to it yet. I picked the British accent and named it Lady Victoria. My parents call theirs Betsy. Today at work, I really tested it out. On my 30 minute lunchbreak, I went to look for a nearby cache. Just me and my GPS. No parents and no Betsy. Didn't find the loot but I thought part of the problem was because I was trying to rush (ended up being late from my lunch anyway! Oops). When it was time to go home, I told Lady to "Take me home". I normally get right on the interstate. Very easy. Not for Lady! "Turn left here!" O..k... Down into a residental area. She kept wanting me to go left....right away. Who cares if I wasn't in the correct lane and if there was traffic behind me (it was late at night so I didn't have to worry about that). So I was kinda lost and trying to compromise with her. Got to where I knew exactly where I was but I gave her one more chance. Bad mistake. "Turn left here!" WHY???? Then I was too busy trying to figure it out that I got totally lost...in the wrong part of town. I shut Lady off and finally found myself. I could read maps better than the GPS! I think I'll return it and get another type. Today I received my charging at home adapter in the mail (forgot to buy one when I bought Lady). I might just return it to Amazon, unless I purchase another GPS that I could use it on.

Editorial Reviews Garmin nüvi 500 3.5-Inch Portable GPS NavigatorFrom Garmin

Amazon.com Manufacturer's Review (July 22, 2008)Perfect for crossing over the threshold from city to backcountry, the Garmin nüvi 500 provides a high-sensitivity GPS receiver with turn-by-turn navigation in a ruggedized, waterproof exterior that you can use while hiking, biking, or boating. With its high-sensitivity, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver and HotFix satellite prediction, nüvi 500 locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover and deep canyons--whether in the city or out in the wilds. And it easily switches modes (driving, walking, biking and boating) to navigate through your active lifestyle depending on your activity. Other features include a 3.5-inch touchscreen, microSD memory expansion, geocaching GPX file capabilities for complete cache descriptions and hints, and Garmin Connect Photos--enabling you to associate your favorite images with saved locations.

The nüvi 500 comes preloaded with the highly detailed City Navigator North America NT maps for the lower 48 states, which also includes topographic maps for a better perspective of your elevation. The map data, provided by NAVTEQ, features over six million points of interest, including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs and attractions.
The DEM basemap (above) provides shaded contours, and the nüvi also includes a digital compass.
Weighing 7.6 ounces and measuring less than an inch thin, the nüvi 500 fits easily in a purse, backpack, or jacket pocket. The 3.5-inch color touchscreen display (with 320 x 240-pixel resolution) is easy to read even in direct sunlight, and the nüvi's easy-to-use interface means you'll spend more time enjoying the outdoors and less time searching for information. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with turn-by-turn voice directions, 2-D or 3-D maps and smooth map updates as you navigate. Its digital elevation model (DEM) mapping shows you shaded contours at higher zoom levels, giving you a big picture of the surrounding terrain. In addition, the nüvi accepts custom points of interest (POIs), such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs.
Garmin's HotFix capability automatically calculates and stores satellite locations, greatly reducing satellite acquisition time so that you can turn the unit on and get going. With HotFix, your nüvi 500 remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off.
Conveniently plug in optional preloaded microSD memory cards for all your outdoor activities on land or water. Just insert an optional Garmin MapSource card with detailed street maps (such as for locales outside the United States), and the nüvi 500 provides turn-by-turn directions to your destination. And with optional BlueChart g2 Vision maps, you'll get everything you need for a great day on the water including depth contours, navaids and harbors.

Customer Reviews Garmin nüvi 500 3.5-Inch Portable GPS NavigatorFrom Garmin

Not bad, but not all good either. This unit is fairly nice, but its more of an on-the-road GPS. It has a terrific 3D view and works well at guiding you down the road. It does lack any way of holding it when in the back country though, and has no screen lock for when you throw it in your backpack, so the touch screen goes nuts while in the pack. It also only comes with the 1:100K TOPO's which are about as useless as they get in the woods, and at the moment Garmin has no TOPO 1:24K maps for the NorthEast, and you have to purchase those separately. There is support for Raster images, but no way to create Raster Maps, which would be a major plus if we could load on USGS 24K maps, which are superior to the ones Garmin uses. I also found the Address lookup ability, which a GPS unit should excel at, was quite useless. There just isnt enough addresses in the unit, it has serious troubles when looking up small towns addresses. I have a legal address and zip code and it refuses to accept it. It will suggest the next town over, or a location several miles from my home, and this is normal for all Garmin's. I find this annoying, because like I said, this should be its strong suit, it is a GPS unit afterall. I did find some custom made 1:24K maps online, and they are pretty good, but no where near as good as the USGS. Its a good unit, but they didnt think it thru very well, maybe the next generation of this unit will fair better. Things that need to be changed or added: 1) Should come with 1:24K Maps 2) They need to get the Raster ability working so we can load USGS 1:24K 3) Address lookups need to be updated/expanded and more accurate(This is a real let down right now) 4) Needs a place to hookup up a strap so you have a way to secure it while carrying it around. 5) Desperately needs a Screen Lock, even Garmin's vehicle units have this, but a Cross-Over unit that spends its time in the woods/backpacks doesnt? 6) Should be smaller, its just a little to large to carry around or hold.(Maybe adding the ability to turn the unit and have the screen view turn with you, its easier to hold the unit the long way)
Excellent unit.. but know something about map updates The Nuvi 500 (vs. the 550) has TOPO maps of the US. Great, but this creates an issue when Garmin releases new maps for their GPSes. The 2010 maps for this will not be available until summer, and if the included 2009 maps are any indication, they may be out of date compared to the standard 2010 maps for their other units. For example, in Milwaukee a major construction for the interstates is completed and included with the 2009 maps for the rest of the GPS line, but it is NOT in the 2009 map version for the Nuvi 500. There is also debate on if Garmin's Lifetime mapping program will be available for this. If you do not need the TOPO maps, and want more up to date maps, you may want to get the Nuvi 550.
cool machine my first gps . easy to use - survived well my first heavy off-raod trip - lots of mud and water around and it run beautiful - after it, i cleaned it and looks as new - i live in brazil .... working great here ... only had to load southamerica map ... rgds !
